fonio's ads strategy: German-first, one offer translated into eight languages

fonio runs 1,327 active Meta ads, more in Austria (258) than Germany (255). Our sample of 135 spans 8 languages. Google ~600, LinkedIn 247.

Published . Ads collected from the public Meta, Google and LinkedIn ad libraries.

fonio, the Austrian AI phone assistant, had 1,327 active ads in the Meta Ad Library, and its home market carries the account: Meta counted 258 active ads reaching Austria and 255 Germany, against 97 for the UK and 13 each for the US and Brazil. In our sample of 135, 61 ads are German, and so are 27 of the 30 that showed an impressions rank. The rest is the same offer translated into seven more languages.

Key findings

  • Austria (258 active ads) edges out Germany (255) in Meta's per-country count; Switzerland adds 119, the UK 97.
  • 37 of 135 sampled ads ask for your website and promise a call back from an AI trained on it.
  • The ad that holds rank 1 in Meta's impressions sort still says "Über 5.000 Unternehmen" (over 5,000 companies), while 25 newer ads say 10,000 and LinkedIn says 9,000.
  • Language decides the funnel: 46 of 61 German ads go to fonio.ai/de, 35 of 44 English ads to a Meta-hosted form, Portuguese ads to a demo-booking page.
  • Four Portuguese ads from 15 October retarget leads, including "Sua demo tá marcada, mas ainda não foi confirmada" (your demo is booked but not yet confirmed).
  • A new web chatbot product arrived in a batch: 14 of its 15 ads started on 4 or 5 October, in German and English.
  • Google shows fonio.ai ads from two verified accounts, fonio GmbH and Adcore East Limited; LinkedIn adds a recruiting message from fonio's Brazil country manager.

The best-ranked ads are German, months old and still running

All 135 sampled ads run under one page, Fonio.ai, with no creator or partner pages. 27 of the 30 ranked ads are German; the other three are one UK ad and two Italian ones. The top three started on 2, 3 and 4 June 2026 and are still live.

They share one creative: a hand on a keyboard before a monitor showing fonio's homepage, with testimonial captions such as "Ich verwende seit zwei Monaten dieses Tool, um Kundenanrufe zu automatisieren" (I've used this tool for two months to automate customer calls) and "Kunden checken nicht mal, dass sie mit KI sprechen" (customers don't even notice they're talking to AI). The rank-1 body opens "🚨 KMU aufgepasst" (SMEs, listen up) and claims "Über 5.000 Unternehmen". Newer ads claim 7,500 (four ads), 9,500 (one) and 10,000 (25). The number on the winning ad was never updated.

Rank 4 is a dark text card, "Es tut uns leid 💔 (aber das muss mal jemand sagen)" (we're sorry, but someone has to say it), a short letter signed "Das Team von fonio". Ranks 6, 7, 9 and 10 mimic a news article under the masthead Inside Unicorn: "fonio.ai: Wiener Startup baut die KI, die auch im Urlaub ans Telefon geht." (Vienna startup builds the AI that answers the phone even on holiday), over a team photo. Rank 22 is a product card, "Die #1 Telefon-KI, die keinen Anruf verpasst.", with an OMR Reviews "#1 von 100 Tools" badge.

The top of Meta's impressions sort: a screen-recording testimonial (rank 1, live since June), an apology letter (rank 4), a news-style article (ranks 6 to 10) and a product card with an OMR badge (rank 22).

One recurring presenter, a CEO demo and a comic strip carry the video

Meta counts 629 video ads, 47% of the total; our sample has 57 video, 66 dynamic and 12 image. One young presenter recurs across German ads: talking to camera ("An alle Unternehmer", to all business owners), pointing at a logo card ("Gehe auf fonio.ai"), and lying in bed under "POV: Du bist Unternehmer, der nachts noch an Kundenanrufe denkt" (POV: you're a business owner still thinking about customer calls at night).

Other formats: "CEO testet eigene Telefon-KI" (CEO tests his own phone AI), a man on a sofa on a call; and a four-panel comic where a tradesman goes from "Schon wieder einen Anruf verpasst" (missed another call) to "Wow... die klingt ja wie ein echter Mensch?!" (she sounds like a real person). The voice is the thread: 18 sampled ads compare it to a real person or employee, and two German videos open on just a waveform on black.

German video and dynamic ads: the recurring presenter, the night-time POV, the CEO test call, the comic strip and an audio-only waveform video (rank 23, 4 copies).

The offer is a call from your own AI, and German ads add a refund

The core action: type in your website and the AI calls you. 37 of 135 sampled ads spell it out. German: "1️⃣ Unternehmensseite eingeben 2️⃣ Formular absenden 3️⃣ Anruf von deiner KI erhalten" (enter your website, submit the form, get a call from your AI), the most-scaled creative in the sample at 11 copies. English: "Your Business Website → Your AI Secretary in 10 Seconds?". Polish: "To narzędzie AI tworzy Ci asystenta telefonicznego w 10 sekund".

German ads add a guarantee: 24 mention a 30-day money-back offer, 11 in the headline "Risikofrei testen – 30 Tage Geld-zurück ✔️" (try risk-free, 30-day money back). Six ads open on the phone menu, and the hook travels: "Drücke die 1, wenn …" in German, "Druk 1 voor..." in Dutch, "Appuie sur 1..." in French, each ending with the customer hanging up.

Translation slips: the two Italian ads at rank 19 run Italian body copy under a German headline, "Kostenloses Expertengespräch Sichern" (book a free expert call).

Outside German: the Italian ad with a German headline (rank 19), the UK "she calls you" ad (rank 20) and the German phone-menu video (rank 24) whose hook the Dutch and French ads translate.

Each language gets its own funnel

German traffic lands on fonio.ai/de: "Der KI Telefonassistent auf Deutsch" (the AI phone assistant in German), a website field, an Eigene KI erstellen (create your own AI) button and "Keine Anmeldung" (no sign-up). It matches the ad promise one-to-one. Pricing starts at €99 a month (Solo, billed annually), then €299 (Team) and from €539 (Scale).

English ads mostly skip the website: 35 of 44 link to a bare fb.me address, and the copy says "2️⃣ Submit the form", so the form lives inside Meta. Headlines are "Get Your Free Consultation" (16) and "Get Your Free Custom Call 📲" (13); 21 use a Sign up button that no German ad uses.

A web chatbot is the newest line: 15 ads (10 German, 5 English), 14 started on 4 or 5 October, opening "Sag hallo zu deinem neuen 24/7-Mitarbeiter für deine Website" (say hello to your new 24/7 employee for your website).

Brazil runs as a separate demo-led market

fonio's June 2026 funding release (a $17M seed led by 20VC) already lists Brazil among its markets. 13 sampled ads are in Portuguese, matching Meta's Brazil count. Nine go to fonio.cc/pt-br/v3, a separate domain with prices in reais, "Escritório em SP" and an Agendar demo (book a demo) form asking for name, work email, phone, company and calls per day. Germany gets self-serve; Brazil gets a sales call.

They are also the only ads that read as retargeting. Four from 15 October: "Você conheceu a fonio, mas o atendimento do seu negócio continua igual." (you met fonio, but your customer service hasn't changed) and "Sua demo tá marcada, mas ainda não foi confirmada. Responde nosso WhatsApp" (your demo is booked but unconfirmed; reply on WhatsApp). That is a no-show reducer bought as media.

Google is two advertiser accounts and five languages

Google's Transparency Center shows about 600 ads for fonio.ai under two verified advertiser accounts. Of 12 captured creatives, 10 are from fonio GmbH: search ads in German, French, Spanish and Dutch plus a German image ad and a video. German headlines sell language and compliance: "Deutschsprachige Telefon-KI" (German-speaking phone AI), "DSGVO-konforme Telefon-KI" (GDPR-compliant), "Die Telefon-KI aus Österreich" (from Austria), and a sitelink "KI-Telefonassistent ab 99€/m" with the Solo price.

The other 2 come from Adcore East Limited, both English and pointing at fonio.ai: "Fonio AI Chatbot - Reporting & Analytics" and "AI Call Handling For Teams - Connect Your CRM & Calendar - 120+ AI Voices".

LinkedIn sells demos in German and recruits in Portuguese

LinkedIn's Ad Library returns 247 ads for "fonio"; all 12 cards we captured are fonio's. Ten are German product ads selling a demo ("Jetzt Kostenlose Demo Sichern", get your free demo now) with "Über 9.000 Unternehmen" as proof, a third customer count. Visuals include an "ohne fonio / mit fonio" split and a quiz-show card with a cartoon rotary phone asking "Wer kümmert sich um Kundenanrufe?" (who handles customer calls?), answer D: "Ab 17:00 niemand" (nobody after 5pm).

One card is a Portuguese sponsored message from fonio's Brazil country manager. It recruits: fonio is "abrindo escritório em Campinas" (opening an office in Campinas) and has "uma vaga de vendas" (a sales role). A twelfth card is a jobs follower ad, so 2 of 12 LinkedIn cards are about hiring.

What to take from it

  1. Sell the moment of proof. 37 of 135 sampled ads promise a call from your own AI, and the landing page asks for exactly that, no sign-up.
  2. Translate a working hook before writing new ones, as fonio does with the phone-menu opener; then check every field, as the Italian ads with a German headline show.
  3. Match the funnel to the market: self-serve for Germany, an on-Meta form for English traffic, demo booking for Brazil and LinkedIn.
  4. Buy media for the step after the lead, like fonio's Portuguese ads chasing unconfirmed demos.
  5. Audit proof numbers on long-running winners. The rank-1 ad, live since June, still says 5,000 companies while newer ads say 10,000.

How we collected this

We read the Meta Ad Library, the Google Ads Transparency Center and the LinkedIn Ad Library logged out on 21 October 2026. Meta reported 1,327 active ads for the Fonio.ai page; we collected 135 from several first-page views (top by impressions, newest, image, video, and per country for Germany, Austria, Switzerland, the US, the UK and Brazil), so percentages describe that sample. Language was classified from each ad's body copy. Impressions rank is Meta's own ordering of active ads, not a spend figure. Meta shows no spend data for ads outside the EU, and we report none. The LinkedIn total comes from a name search; the 12 cards we checked were all fonio's.
