Perplexity's ads strategy: selling Computer, one job at a time

Perplexity runs 508 active Meta ads. 57 of 65 we sampled sell Computer, its agent product, not the answer engine. Plus ~2K Google ads and LinkedIn DMs.

Published . Ads collected from the public Meta, Google and LinkedIn ad libraries.

Perplexity built its name as an answer engine, but its paid social now sells something else. In our sample of 65 active Meta ads, 57 (88%) promote Perplexity Computer, the agent product it launched in February 2026. Each ad pitches Computer for one specific job: running a Shopify store, applying for jobs, fixing a Poshmark closet, finding grants.

Key findings

  • 57 of 65 sampled Meta ads sell Computer; only 6 sell the core answer engine, but one of those 6 holds the #1 impressions slot.
  • 63 of the 65 ads started between August and October 2026, with 41 launched in September alone.
  • Copy is cut by job: 16 ads target Shopify and DTC sellers, 8 target job seekers, and the rest cover SEO, grants, investors, Poshmark and legal.
  • Format decides the funnel: all 33 video ads send people to an app deep link, while 16 of 20 static image ads go to a use-case page on perplexity.ai.
  • 7 ads run under creators' names (5 accounts) with #PerplexityPartner tags and comment-to-get-a-link prompts.
  • The headline number drifts: the same pitch claims 15+, 19 or 20+ AI models depending on the ad.
  • On LinkedIn, half of the 12 cards we captured are templated messages sent in the name of one Perplexity employee, offering $1,000 in credits per team for a 15-minute demo.

Computer gets the volume, the answer engine keeps the top slot

Sort Perplexity's active Meta ads by impressions and the first one is not about Computer. It is a vertical podcast clip of a bearded man at a microphone, captioned "You're paying", with the headline "Unlimited and Cited." and the body "Unlimited cited answers." Five more ads reuse that copy over different podcast clips, including a woman reacting "wait what's" and "I didn't know that". Two of them sit at #9 and #15.

Everything else in the top 10 is Computer. Positions 2 to 8 and 10 are Shopify cards, a man in a red beanie under the caption "Stop using ChatGPT to run your store...", and job-search statics. So the consumer answer engine still gets one well-funded evergreen message, while the launch budget is spread across many Computer use cases.

The #1 ad by impressions is a podcast clip selling cited answers. Computer ads fill most of the remaining top 10.

The copy system is one product sold through a dozen jobs

38 of the 65 ads share one headline, "Introducing Computer". The work happens in the body and the creative, which name a single job and a single audience. Shopify sellers get "20+ AI models run your Shopify store." Job seekers get a serif card reading "Applied to 50 jobs this month and no interviews?" Resellers get "Your closet has 200 listings. Poshmark is showing 12 of them." Marketers get "You rank well on Google but ChatGPT never mentioned you."

Meta ads in our sample of 65, grouped by the audience the copy names. The general row holds creator ads, two untitled athlete clips and single ads for sponsor sourcing and construction estimating.

The contrast line does the positioning. "Computer is a teammate you delegate to, not a chatbot you prompt" and "Chat gives you answers. Agents can run a task. Computer executes entire workflows" both frame ChatGPT-style chat as the old way. The multi-model angle carries the rest: icons for OpenAI, Google and Anthropic sit next to the Perplexity logo on the Shopify cards, and one creative shows a model picker listing GPT, Claude and Grok options.

One loose end: the model count is not consistent. 15 ads say 20+ models, 8 say 19, and 3 say 15+. The Shopify image even reads "Put 15+ AI models to work" above body copy that says 20+.

Same headline, different job: job search, Poshmark, a LinkedIn audit prompt and Shopify, all on the same black-or-cream serif template.

Video goes to the app, static goes to a use-case page

The cleanest pattern in the data is how format maps to destination. All 33 video ads in the sample link to a Singular deep link (perplexity.sng.link) with Download, Install now or Sign up as the CTA. 16 of the 20 static images link to a page under perplexity.ai/gen/computer/ with Learn more or See details.

FormatTo app deep linkTo perplexity.ai use-case page
Video (33)330
Image (20)416
Dynamic (12)75
Destination by format, sample of 65 active Meta ads.

There are 8 distinct use-case pages: job-applications (7 ads), seo (3), find-angels (3), poshmark-audit (2), grant-finder (2), ai-seo (2), sponsor-sourcing (1) and an AI construction estimating page (1). The job-applications page opens with "Automate your job search in minutes" and a "Start my search" button that leads straight to sign-in. Several of these URLs carry an interval=monthly or interval=yearly parameter, so the pages appear to hand off into a paid plan. Video is used to get installs; statics are used to explain one job and push a signup.

Creators and podcast clips carry the video, not product demos

Seven ads run under a creator's name rather than Perplexity AI: Financial Wolf (2), Landon Bytheway (2), jimmyoyang, olamideaolowe and Anton Mehto. These are partnership ads, and the copy reads like the creator's own post. "Mood board to millions with @perplexity Computer. Comment 'COMPUTER' and I'll send you the free trial #PerplexityPartner" runs over a hand sketching gowns. Landon Bytheway's ad, about building an inventory system with NFC stickers, is the most duplicated creative in the sample at 4 copies.

The oldest ad in the sample is also a creator ad. Financial Wolf's "brings all these" video, with Grok, ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini icons on a white screen, has run since April 24, 2026 and ranks #10 by impressions. Everything else started in August or later. Elsewhere, people are on screen in almost every video: podcast guests at microphones, a man on a grassy hill, a founder in a red beanie at his desk. A screenshot of a tweet ("Perplexity Computer + Shopify is actually nuts") works as social proof in the dynamic Shopify set.

Partnership ads from creators sit beside Perplexity's own UGC-style clips and a tweet-screenshot static.

LinkedIn's library returns up to 1,443 ads for Perplexity, and all 12 cards we captured belong to Perplexity. This is the enterprise channel. Six of the 12 are message ads signed by Kate Murphy, with the merge tags still visible in the library: "Hi %FIRSTNAME%! As %JOBTITLE% at %COMPANYNAME%...". Each asks for 15 minutes and offers "$1,000 in Perplexity credits" per team; one earlier variant offers "free $5,000 access codes". The other six are document ads and webinars: an 11-page AI Adoption Guide ("Only 23% of organizations have scaled AI"), an 8-page guide for private equity, a buyside workshop with speakers from Point72, Goldman Sachs, Evercore and Silver Lake, and "Still paying for GPT, Claude, and Gemini separately?"

What to take from it

  1. Sell a broad product through narrow jobs. Perplexity keeps one headline ("Introducing Computer") and swaps the first line and the image per audience: Shopify, jobs, Poshmark, grants, SEO. Each has its own landing page.
  2. Split format by goal. Video in this sample always drives the app install; statics always explain one task and send to a page. Decide the destination before you brief the creative.
  3. Keep the evergreen winner running while you launch. The cited-answers podcast clip still holds #1 by impressions next to dozens of Computer ads.
  4. Let creators post in their own voice with a comment trigger. "Comment 'COMPUTER'" turns an ad into a DM flow, and the most duplicated creative in the sample is a creator's.
  5. Lock your claims. Three different model counts (15+, 19, 20+) across live ads is easy to avoid with one copy source of truth.

How we collected this

We read the Meta Ad Library, Google Ads Transparency Center and LinkedIn Ad Library logged out on 2026-10-21. Meta reported 508 active ads for Perplexity's page; we collected 65 of them from filtered first-page views (top by impressions, newest, by format and by country), so percentages describe that sample, not the full set. Meta's country counts showed 331 ads in the US and 77 each in the UK, Canada and Australia. Impressions rank is Meta's own ordering of active ads, not a spend figure, and Meta publishes no spend data for ads outside the EU. The LinkedIn total comes from a name search and may include other advertisers.
